History & Biography Born to a damp Northern France in 1996 the French thrashers switched to being an avant pop folk goth metal band and issued an EP called L'Entremonde in 2001 before issuing the full-length five years later. Many members came and went in the meantime. A DVD appeared in 2008 and the band put shows with everyone from Saxon to After Forever under its belt. Barbara's flute could not save the act from bankruptcy apparently. The end was 2010.
Reviews AMPHITRYON - SUMPHOKERAS - PERVADE
Could it be that the complexity and complicated nature of Sumphokeras is explained by the fact that the debut full-length is the ten-year old band’s first? Could it be that the band has used the intervening years to create, fashion and layer these songs which without fail have complex and varied arrangements mixing metal with goth, world music and orchestral and operatic influences?
In contrast to its minimalist cover artwork Amphitryon is a band that values layer upon layer of sound. While the album kicks off with an intro which reminisces the backward monk chants of Eyes Wide Shut (a nagging feeling that is repeated with the acoustic guitar strum towards the album’s end) and a deep and heavy growl the song quickly heads for My Dying Bride and Phlebotomized territory. A clear sound - although the mix is not quite the same - cages music that touches upon Therion’s love for orchestration and operatic wails and Arabic or Oriental medleys. Heavy metal fans will love for cover. Patient operators of variety and ”˜open mind’ will not. - Ali “The Metallian”
