Formed from the ashes of Denata in 2006, Freevil issued a three-song sampler and an album in 2007. The band featured three veteran members of Sweden’s death metal scene with pedigree dating into the early '90s. The band featured a more 'horror-like' direction. A character called Phanatos added electronic elements.
FREEVIL - FREEVIL BURNING - NASTIFIED
When the band e-mailed me regarding the album my reply included a question about the disc’s title. “Is it a take on the Judas Priest song Freewheel Burning?” The band’s reply was obvious and quick. Yes, it is.
If you thought Freevil is a gimmicky monicker you would be right; after all the band features an ex-Witchery member, which by definition means both enjoyable and of dubious long-term value. Speaking of Witchery, the vocals courtesy of former Witchery and Séance drummer Mique is squeaky, evil and screamy to hell. The sticker on the album proclaims this as “the ultimate sickness,” but lest anyone has visions of Gorerotted or Deranged in their heads the Swedish trio are more like a mix of Witchery and Notre Dame than anything else. The music is horror-infused which sadly means keyboards, synthesizers and other effects. Too bad, for the aggressive Macabre vocals, bashing music and rhythmic music are violent fun. The use of female vocals on Hate and an accordion on Live The Lie do not help obviously. Nevertheless, this is a fairly original piece of aggressive horror shock rock with a great cover and artwork to match (referring to the torch and flame of course). - Ali “The Metallian”
