History & Biography
This Mayhem was formed on the US West Coast in 1983. The band was perhaps best known for inadvertently getting the Norwegian Mayhem to put a 'The True' superscript above its logo, but in fact the Burned Alive LP was well promoted in its time. The group was signed to the French label Black Dragon on the back of its As The World Burns demo. The group disbanded and three members were in local punk rock band Poison Idea.

US Metal remembered the band enough to issue a Mayhem compilation in 2006. It was called Burned Alive Demos 1985. Actually, US Metal was the label of singer Matt McCourt. Hanford was arrested for a string of pharmacy robberies in Portland, Oregon on October 6, 2008. He would die of a heart attack in 2020. Another compilation was As the World Burns - Complete Recordings 1984-1987 in 2023. It was released by F.O.A.D.

The band sounded like a cross between Motörhead and Megadeth. The band appeared on Metal Massacre VI with vocalist Nick Damis who was in the band in 1984 to 1985. Years later McCourt auditioned to replace Rob Halford via a demo tape. The band's logo was designed so it could be ready upside down as well.
