MORIBUNDO – RAIZ AMARGA – SATANATH
This is one heavy and doomy underground band from Spain that could make waves, but alas the band – not unlike many of its peers – has a chink in its armour. Yup, you guessed it fascinatingly wimpy background vocals and the usual fare of a keyboard rearing its head on Antitesis, Suicidio Ilustrado (the worst offender) and Luz (Ciego Color) is the problem. Thank Beelzebub, however, the rest of this abomination is heavy, crushing and the offending wimdom artifacts are not steady. The vocalist, speaking of whom, is gargling glass and blood up the larynx most of the time despite the instrumental passages being prevalent. The growls are deep, the guitars heavy and the drumming reliable, but the bass has a habit of shining whenever it decides to kick in. The bass work is superlative.
This four-track thirty-disc-minute album would rate higher were it not for the superfluous and alien elements mentioned above. More Decomposed (UK) and funeral doom please and less early My Dying Bride please. Purity rules! – Ali “The Metallian”
