History & Biography
It was only a matter of time for a band with a North American Indian slant to appear given the continual fracture of the metal scene. The force that was created to unify the underdog and downtrodden and empower them through the music of the gods was transformed into acts playing folk this, ethnic that and, of course, use rattle as a musical instrument. Take that, kantele!

Nechochwen (a.k.a. Aaron Carey), who also handled the vocals, acoustic guitar and keyboards, took Northern Haze’s torch and established the act as a solo one to celebrate “North American Indian heritage” in 2005. The act was founded as the follow-up to Angelrust, which was founded in 1999. The new act was meant to only feature acoustic guitars and was not metal. Algonkian Mythos was released in 2008. Andrew Della Cagna was on bass and drums. The newer member was an oft collaborator with Carey and also one of those modern serial project members. He was also an illustrator and concert promoter. The act itself had hitherto been a studio project.

The band had a 2012 EP called OtO. The band considered the EP’s focus to be ancestral wisdom. The folk band deployed flutes. One side was acoustic and another was electric. The act incorporated more metal elements during this period. Among others, Panopticon and Nechochwen had a split release before the latter’s Live At Winterblot - Triple Rock Social Club Minneapolis, Minnesota 12-20-2014 demo of 2020. This was a fundraiser for the Migizi Education Center For American Indians in Minnesota. The two bands had also appeared at Shadow Woods Metal Fest 2017. A new album emerged in 2022. The band was using a guitarist called Amanda Mccoy for concerts. The act was recording in 2023.

The word ‘Nechochwen’ is Lenape and translates into ‘walking alone.’ The Lenape are aboriginal people, also known as Delaware, of North East USA and parts of Canada. The band calls itself, “Apalači folk metal from the Mountain State.” West Virginia is occasionally called the Mountain State.
