Metallian Demos

UNCLE SID - ROCK IN THE UNIVERSE
Vancouver's Uncle Sid is a hard rock band the likes of which one finds less and less these days. The band has an honest and fun sound which incorporates influences that bring names like Guns 'N Roses, Thin Lizzy, ZZ Top, Rainbow, Krokus, Rush (the intros) and Dokken to mind. The music is often slow and no-frills, but that is compensated by the musicians' warm approach to hard rock. The singer is the band's main asset with his adventurous and convincing singing, yelling, musing and screaming. The band's allegiance to good music is admirable, but shouldn't there be more hard songs and less slow tracks on Rock In The Universe? Uncle Sid appears to consciously avoid being over the top. That should not stop you from looking into this band though. Check the out at www.unclesid.com. - Ali "The Metallian"

MOONLIGHT COMEDY - THE LIFE INSIDE
Moonlight Comedy is not easy listening not because it is the world's most extreme band, but because of the constant bobs of progressive rock, speedy guitar licks, keyboard-oriented rock frolicking and hard rocking maneuvers. The band's frontman, Emiliano Germani, has a capable high pitch that is backed by several layers and a second voice sharply similar to that of Savatage's Jon Oliva. The music - and the professional packaging - smacks of a high budget and above average quantity with its nine songs and over 53 minutes of length. This is a big affair and fans of underground progressive music and everything from Yngwie Malmsteen to Dream Theater will appreciate this. The band can be contacted through its publicity company www.kickagency.com or by e-mailing info@kickagency.com. - Ali "The Metallian"

TIME KILLS EVERYTHING - same
Time Kills Everything is a new Canadian techno-grindcore band that notwithstanding that features members from more experienced bands like Fuck The Facts and He Broke. The experience shows, for the songs are both technical and brutally heavy. The samples and drum machines do distract, but the strength of the riffs and the heavy sound, as well as the very depraved vocals reminiscent of The Accused make for a compelling listen for fans of technical grind. Visit www.capitalkill.com or e-mail esteve_decalice@yahoo.ca. - Ali "The Metallian"

PANDEMONIC - THE ART OF HUNTING
Trust the Swedes to do Pantera better than Pantera itself! Not that Pantera was a glorious band or that Pandemonic is a clone act, but some of the riffs and the voice of Micke Ullenius more than hints at the American thrash stars. Having said that, there is a lot of good metal on this four-song demo. Add some Iced Earth rhythm guitar, early Testament flair and a couple of good solos to Pantera and one gets Pandemonic - cool monicker by the way. The solo on Ravenous, for instance, has vintage metal written all over it. If you are into Pantera, or even if you are not, head over to www.pandemonic.com for more information or e-mail info@pandemonic.com. - Ali "The Metallian"

ABSENTIA LUNAE - MARCHING UPON FORGOTTEN ASHES
Absentia Lunae hails from Italy and was born in 2002. The band's CD is a lavish affair with professional printing and artwork which contains nine tracks and 45 minutes of music. All that is good, but when one gets to the band's biography things begin to get perplexing. "The Absentia Lunae's concept is the neverending evolution notwithstanding the indissoluble tie with the most mature form of occult magic," and "The 9 hymns are speaking about the grey perception of these irreversible spells of decadence, created by the masses to trap the masses with the abyss at the horizon." You don't say?
Skipping the fiddlesticks then the band's music is a mix between harsh and raw metal a la Gorgoroth and early Ulver and the later meanderings of Burzum and the ilk. The band's music is simple and the drumming questionable, but one suspects that Absentia Lunae is more concerned with the creation of atmosphere rather than delivering tight or structured songs. Acoustic passages and spoken parts mar the landscape, but the bulk of the material is of a savage and screamed nature. Write the band at info@absentialunae.com. - Ali "The Metallian"

GRIDLOKT - WRISTS UNDER RAZORS
If Pantera with Korn like overtones is your mug of ale’ well this band is just that. An assortment of drum rhythms patterned with furious guitar riffs make Gridlokt a sought after band with diverse energy which most bands to date lack. Heavy ferocious music raising the standards of metal music is what one can expect with the Gridlokt’s latest full-length CD entitled Wrists Under Razors. A melodic tone with harsh singing vocalist Shmegs blends the combination of both to newer extremes complimenting the rest of the brutal onslaught of Gridlokt. Song highlights of powerful tunes that this band bestows to the listener is first track B.C. shredding intensity of musical prowess that is utilized throughout the rest of the song listing of this album. Track six shows the group’s metal melodic twist that Gridlokt is more than well capable of constructing sound wise with this song. Overall this CD has some striking recording production enhancing already an established band but giving the listener an album worth to mosh to. Downside would have to be the endless band conversion on the ending track of A.D. about three minutes after the ending of the song the band is heard bitching and complaining about senseless topics. Please! Other than that a job well done Gridlokt. To know more about Gridlokt visit the band site www.gridlokt.net - Jussi
