IVORY KNIGHT - UNCONSCIENCE
Ottawa's Ivory Knight is back visiting Metallian Towers with a demo. Unconscience comes with a professional packaging, fifty minutes of music and ten songs. The band was originally formed in the late '80s and the sound proudly perpetuates the classic metal sound.
The band's heart is musically in the right place and shades of Belladonna-era Anthrax, Annihilator and Iron Maiden can be found throughout the CD. In fact, look for speed and heavy metal, hard rock and even progressive metal on the demo. The title track, in particular, reminds me of fellow Ottawa colleagues Annihilator. It is no surprise that Ivory Knight's main man John Devadasan Perinbam and Jeff Waters go way back. Waters has also taken it upon himself to mix this disc. The arrangements need some work in this band, but the individuals are clearly masters of their instruments. The band should have saved its best songs for this demo instead of going all-out length-wise. Still, if giving value to the fans is one's sole strategy then one probably should not argue with Unconscience. For information write to email@example.com. - Ali "The Metallian"
IVORY NIGHT - 7 - DAWN OF THE NIGHT
Ivory Night is a German band from Kaiserslautern whose ironically-titled demo CD follows its countrymen's propensity for releasing full-lengths at the demo stage. The disc features 14 songs and lasts more than 55 minutes.
Ironically, the CD's opening tracks The 7th Sea and Killer 7 (see a theme developing?) are not so hot. Just when the listener starts to lose interest though the band begins to kick in with one good song after the other. The song And I Fly is an upbeat and happening heavy metal song. The band's sound begins to take shape as a cross between Iron Maiden and Blind Guardian. Salvation Is An Honest Man is next and sounds too close to Metallica's Welcome Home (Sanitarium) for comfort. The Ghost is a minute-long instrumental and is followed by Mighty Wings features some fantastic guitar work. The song is also catchy. Insane has a cool bass line and is an effective tune. Beyond The Pain is the closest the band gets to Blind Guardian, while My Dearest Love is, unsurprisingly, a slow song. Never Be My Friend is another song worthy of note. It is relatively fast, has superb guitar solos and even reminds me of NWOBHM's Weapon. The album ends with the imposing Mother Earth which at over eight minutes is slower, has eerie lyrics and some interesting vocal harmonies.
Making demos this long is usually a mistake as bands need to highlight their best material only, but 7 - Dawn Of The Night proves that Ivory Tower has what it takes to compete on the hard rock and heavy metal scenes with the best of them. That is why it pays to send the band 10 Euros for this. Write them at Carsten Kettering, Kaffeegasse 10, 66879 Reichenbach Germany. ASSASSIN - THE CLUB
In an age when a significant number of older bands reform one wonders if it is right to expect a modern sounding reincarnation or is it acceptable, maybe even expected, to hear the old sounds again. From the first and title track it is clear that The Club makes no attempt to be anything new. Song after song this comes across as thrashcore or just plain hardcore. Songs like Raging Mob, Bushwhacker and others with lyrics like ‘prowl aloud through the streets’ and ‘join the pack, it’s a hooligan desire’ certainly add to the punkish attitude as do the vocals of Robert Gonnella and the cover (a mob at the club?). It is not until the seventh track Go Insane that the music really tries to come to the fore with the guitars seemingly more prominent. The club, with four original members, features a cover of Thin Lizzy’s Thunder And Lightning but not enough of the thrash metal one might expect. - Anna Tergel
PICKUP - BURN AGAIN CHRISTIAN
When a band calls its demo CD Burn Again Christian and has a cover photograph of a maniac standing in front of a hell of a blaze visions of Gorgoroth or Deicide come to mind. The band might be black metal with song titles like No Compromise, Unconditional Misbelief or Summon Myself, but the sound is a mix of Pro-Pain, Crowbar and Motörhead. The music is mid-paced and heavy and the vocals are gruff and harsh. This is not the usual Finnish fare and concentrates on impact and groove. Trivia: listen for the classic Born To Be Wild riff at the end of the song Betrayed. Contact the band at email@example.com for more details. - Ali "The Metallian"
TERROR ASCENDS - OF DARK DESCENT
Terror Ascends is a young death/black metal formed in March of 2002 by Sterling Boyd and Bryan Riffe in order to play catchy metal with lyrics about darkness, science and religion. The four songs on the CD showcase a developing band with a commitment to basic death metal with minimum number of frills. The vocals are alternately growled and screamed and the sound muffled. The music is mostly mid-paced although fast parts come into play every so often. This is for death metal fanatics with 666 ears to the (under)ground and no one else. Head over to www.terrorascends.com or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org for information. - Ali "The Metallian"
SUPERVILLAIN - EARTHQUAKE MACHINE
The knights at Metallian Towers have had their eye on New York City's Supervillain ever since the band sent in a fantastic self-titled demo for review last year. It is splendid to be able to report that the quintet's new disc is also impressive. Featuring 42 minutes and eleven tracks, Earthquake Machine comes with lots of feeling, talent and street-wise grit under the hood. The demo's opener Show Em All is a good song, but hardly the band's best. The real show starts with the wild Nevermore which soon establishes the band's great raw talent. The songs range from the manner of an up-tempo Cathedral to raunchy hard rock like Circus Of Power. In fact, both fans of Guns 'n Roses and NWOBHM will probably rev up to this. The band is not afraid to solo, place a bluesy riff into the mix or to punk it up. Not all the song work though. Vicious Cycle goes nowhere fast and Prey to Me is not that great either. Still, given Supervillain's emotional content and musical story there can be no doubt that this band will be signed. Book early by writing to email@example.com or visit www.musicrealms.com/supervillain.com. - Ali "The Metallian"
DIMENTIANON - PROMO 2005
Not sure who or what Dimentianon is or why a label like Paragon Records would send this in presumably for a review, but chances are that the band is either signed to the American label now or that the label's proprietor is in the band. Either way, this is dark and grim sonic death from the depths of the abyss of heavy metal. The dark undergrowth of guitars and the doom-ridden dirge of the drums top a sordid growl meant to disparage everything considered tasteful or acceptable in modern society. Songs like Terriblis Est Locus Iste or Blood Shed From A Black Rose have as much commercial potential as a meal at Burger King has nutrition. Please have this CD in your pocket if you decide to kill your co-workers. You will at least be playing to type. - Ali "The Metallian"
