Metallian Demos

Did not expect much from this band and they took me by surprise. This disc was released at the end of 2013 by this five-piece from Edmonton and it is the real thing. Edmonton is known more for 18th century-style rightist politics and not for metal and boys and girls The group seems to be making hey of its featuring drummer Bryan Newbury who now sits on the stool with Into Eternity and that is fine. However, more important is how this “death and thrash metal” band conveys an unyielding sound, speed, heavy fury and two styles vocals impeccably. The growls are heavy, the Carcass-screams are convincing, the leads (Scorched Earth Policy, Malice Incarnate, etc.) are real, the rhythm section is brutal and the drums keep bashing ahead whenever the rest of the songs decide to vary the tempo or become more complex. Speaking of which, the group likes to add complicated patterns so we are kept on our toes. Malice Incarnate is like those old Anacrusis discs. The dual vocals and breaks are about dominance. Carcass would be proud of this bunch. The dubbed movie – I suppose – intro and outro are clichés, but the rest of this contains zero filler.
Hopefully this music will spread throughout the band’s area like the Infection Legacy of the bacteria on the cover. The group is at or e-mail them through - Anna Tergel

This project like the word ‘project’ it seems. So how is the project going? Projecting the band’s biography unto the review there is a hint of grunge in the proceedings, but it lies entirely in the vocals f Lucas Lemke who projects a grittiness and melancholy in his vocals. Layering and backing vocals, which project oodles of emotions, augment the singing. The music is a cross between prog-lite and alternative rock and of little value to the projectors of might of hard rock or heavy metal. Otherwise, for regular readers of Metallian and fans of heavy metal this is as much a sure bet as a Hail Mary projectile in the dying seconds of a football game. The guitar projects well and the bass sound is clear too. One imagines those who like music by projects like King’s X would appreciate the Brazilians’ work. Worst-Case Scenario has a couple of heavy moments. Favorite (sic) Enemy is textured and varied, while Lost In The Fray again is slower and commercial. Kudos to the producer and studio for the sound, which managed the project. The band may be contacted through - Ali “The Metallian”

Winnipeg, Canada quintet's third release is nine songs and 41 minutes long. Origin Of The Infection is heavy with start/stop riffing that makes it sound a bit more 'modern' or industrial than it is. Defile is more clearcut. It features growling vocals and basically a single heavy, catchy riff that is part doom. Re-Hybridized Strain starts off clearly on the epic doom side of metal. Mindfold leaves the doom behind and picks up the pace venturing into the death metal a la Grave. Genome Degradation takes a stab at funeral doom. Searing Cital is somewhat out of place musically with it being closer to simple mid-paced hard rock or heavy metal. Garden Raiding deepens the mystery of the band's name and can be termed uneventful doom. Open Casket is an extended cover of the Death song and features Into Eternity's Tim Roth and Broken Hope's Chuck Wepfer. Hymnosis closes with Journey To The Sun. It is melodic and equally gothic and doom. It would easily fit in an early Tristania album.
Psychotic Gardening's one claim to fame is that vocal and guitar man Chuck Labossiere filled in with Broken Hope for its tour dates in Europe and Canada in 2012. Reach the band at – Anna Tergel

Shores Of Hope is this Italian quintet's debut demo. Ten songs and 43 minutes long it feels like a Guns N Roses and Motley Crue mashup of sorts. It is not a big stretch to say the opener Guns! Guns! Guns! would be a sort of new Girls, Girls, Girls. Enrico Ghirelli's voice comes through as an Axl Rose with a bit of Dave Mustaine thrown in. Odd combination perhaps but something in songs like The Border does hint at Mustaine. Ozone Fades has slower sections that depart from typical hard rock. Godspeed is ballad-ish. Nuclear Warfare starts ominously with a heavier riff and tries to keep it up. Pharaoh, unsurprisingly, has an eastern feel in its opening seconds and remains catchy. Black Century is reminiscent of System Of A Down's Chop Suey! in its opening and a power ballad otherwise. Uhlans, 1915 is Iron Maiden's Alexander The Great inspired and once again, not much more than a ballad otherwise. Rock Beast returns to more standard hard rock, aiming for Dokken heights perhaps. My Heaven is the closer and is an even more standard ballad. Find the band at – Anna Tergel
