Metallian Demos

Fact: 7th Nemesis is an unsigned band without a previous release. Fact: Remember fellow French band Inhumate? France is the most underrated metal country in the world. Fact: This is the most brutally vicious music that has been released in a while and is faster and heavier than anything that will come in here next month or the month after that. Fact: The many vocals of Sargon are tumult incarnate. This man is a demon possessed. The scream coming out of the mid-interlude on Phoenix Resuurectio is worth the price alone. Fact: This is as fast as early Kataklysm and heavy as early Suffocation. Fact: This is a self-recorded CD which happens to crush every other major studio recording. The sound screams 'death!' Fact: Sign this band, buy this CD, visit the website - just do something!! or Alex Sauzet, 150 Avenue Pierre Brossolette, 84170 Le Perreux France.

The particulars of Dream Or Nightmare have me slightly confused. This seems to be an advanced CD of material due for more proper release at a later time. There is no vocalist named, but we do know that Dream Or Nightmare is the band of guitarist Joe Sims who is a veteran of several other bands like Axemaster and Reign.
The four songs on this CD showcase a band carrying the US metal torch. The heavy metal riffs bleed into thrash metal and married to the deliberate aggressiveness remind the listener of the heyday of US metal. The group does mix in a variety of tempos into its work. This stuff would fit perfectly on a Metal Massacre compilation. This being an advance demo please write the band regarding its availability. Find the band at or write to P.O. Box 3046, Kent, OH. 44240 USA.

This is an odd release. Why would an independent act release a four-song CD which features three cover versions? Perhaps Lakehurst's main preoccupation is its live show which is said to feature male strippers, pyro, choreography and other gimmicks. Ironically, the band's own song, Stay, is superior to the Eurythmics, Michael Jackson, etc. covers on the disc. The band is not pulling legs either as the very good sound on the CD seemingly proves. The band can play well and front-woman Nicole Braun is an accomplished vocalist with convincing vocals. Stay sounds like a cross between Journey and Pat Benatar. Lakehurst plays upwards of thirty shows a year, which is just as well because there is no point in buying a CD full of other people's music. The CD can be ordered via where you will also find more information about the quintet.

Miracles is the predecessor to Lakehurst's So Sexy MCD and features twelve original songs recorded in the year 2000. Lakehurst is an interesting band. Fans of AOR, hard rock and heavy rock should take note. First things first though. The band has a history of over ten years and a story which competes with that of any other veteran act. The band has in fact released several demos and even refused recording and management deals. Sickened with the scam artists of the scene, Lakehurst seemingly is concentrating on its extensive live show. Fans of the above-mentioned styles, plus a ballad or two, should write the band directly though.
Miracles is a professional CD with a professional sound. The keyboards are too prominent for my tastes, but Singer Nicole Bruan and the rest of the musicians are indeed accomplished and surprisingly adept.
One final note of interest is the cover illustration of the construction of a zeppelin and its relation to the band's moniker. See if you can figure it out. or Ringstr. 11, 63486 Bruchkoebel Germany.

The music of Maple Cross is aggressive, but the vocals of Marco R.J. are one level harder. Long considered broken up for good, Finland's Maple Cross has reformed and issued three songs here crossing heavy, speed and thrash metal. The closest comparisons are Hypocrisy, Sacrifice and At The Gates - especially vocally. Further reference can be made to The Haunted and even Sacred Blade. So let's check again. Are they Swedish? No. Are they Canadian? No. Fine then, they are actually Finnish and have dared release aggressive metal without k&F, harpsichord, harmonica and a string quartet. Now we are all confused. Seriously, find the band at and hope that the act will get signed this time. Now a quick note regarding technology. The band has sent in a second CD containing information, biography and their photos. Guess what? My computer does not read it. Don't you love technology?

Witchtower (notice not Watchtower) is a German death/thrash band which was formed in 1998. Under Fallen Wings is the band's second demo and the follow-up to the Anthems Of Decay CD. What do they sound like you ask? Well, a desultory intro leads into Demon Unleashed which establishes the band's early Destruction influence. The style is a welcome one given how speed-oriented and harsh it is. The rhythmic and treble sound is also reminiscent of Dissection. Much of what the Swedes proposed to accomplish can be heard on the third song called Warcult. Having said that the next immediate track Apocalyptic Conquest - another apt title - demonstrates that Witchtower possesses great riffs of its own in its arsenal as well. Although the band has to cease fading out tracks, an action better suited for pop bands.
The band's thrash attack is a little workman-like though. It is difficult to write this given how action-packed and dynamic things here are, but the quintet should consider adding a little pizzazz to the affair via a drum roll here, a solo or a guitar lick there. The vocals are good as well, often advancing at the listener courtesy of two vocal channels.
Along with France's 7th Nemesis Witchtower is another sign that the metal underground is alive and well. Fans will love the speed and harmonies on these mayhemic power-songs. Please send either 15 Euros or $20 (Can.) to Ralf Janssen, Buschweg 99, D-47546 Kalkar Germany or email The CD is professionally packaged and recorded.
