History & Biography

Thrashcore band Protected Illusion was from Vantaa, which is a Helsinki suburb near the city’s airport. The band’s heritage stemmed back to very early crossover bands Mayhem and Outrage. The band issued a Demo 88, which is also the year the band was founded. Sugi was the singer on this tape, but left shortly thereafter. Opulence And Preservation…Poverty And Desperation came next. This 1989 demo contained eight tracks, but had a length of less than 20 minutes. The band also issued an independent 7” that year. Still with no label in the offing the band released a 1990 demo called Festering Fairytales. Timo Tolkki of Stratovarius became the band’s producer here and further on. Another 7”with a black and white cover was called Sandman’s Store. The Dreams Downtrodden and Autumn Arrives demos preceded Shadows Illuminated.

With demos not working out the band threw in the towel in 1994 at the height of the death metal boom. Marquee Records of Brazil issued a CD compilation of the band called 1989-1991: Watching The Wake in 2008. The band members were later together in the gothic Sinisthra and Nevergreen.

The band reunited for a one-off show opening for Waltari in 2011.
