SANATORIUM - INTERNAL WOMB CANNIBALISM - FORENSICK
Listening to the new Sanatorium CD in the Magic Rooms at Metallian Towers, imagination had me seeing the band perform on the Tower grounds with none other than Mexico's Disgorge. Lo and behold, opening the bio one learns of a recent (May 2001) European tour featuring Disgorge and Sanatorium. It makes sense after all. The Slovaks are sick. After an intro warning of impending annihilation, Postmortal Goreaphobia flies out of the speakers with a nicely-worked 'vocal' melody featuring ultra low growling that is actually well thought out. This is the vocalist that Cryptopsy (see The Metal Report) needs to sound serious. The two vocal attack here rules. The sound is good, but the rhythm guitars definitely need some 'buzz' to them. They are not sharp enough. Still, as songs like The Cunts Name Is Heather, Intravenous Ejaculation and the title track prove the band is not just musical brutality but has good titles and ideas to boot. Some lyrical contribution is on offer here courtesy of Matt Bishop of Lividity and James Parks of Prophecy and the resulting work is masterful. One can not but love lines like, ' I' m fascinated by the openings in the human body, but not the natural ones.' Material like this, the entertaining early Gorefest riff in Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, the generally sheer heaviness and speed of the music and original ideas like the exchange on The False Prophet naturally make me recommend this piece of sick art. - Ali "The Metallian"
