SCEPTER - I'M GOING TO HELL - MERCILESS
The Chicago band Scepter first came to my attention via the numerous flyers for their debut EP Up Thy Ass. The flyers were running amok in the underground which prompted me to take an immediate dislike to the band. Only an American band could come up with such an ingrate album title. Up Thy Ass is analogous to screaming 'yo yo my majesty, wass up?' It makes no sense at all.
Enough digression though. Having released one more MCD entitled Metal Supremacy the metal trio has now signed to Germany's Merciless Records, home to many a good band, and has released this ten-song CD featuring cuts like Solitary Suicide, Obsessed By Metal and Ready To Rape. Scepter is obviously a true metal entity and reveals little that can be taken as light or trivial. With roots firmly in the Celtic Frost corner of things, and coupled with menacing vocals and extended soloing this band is really for those who take their metal seriously. On the other hand, the band does little that hasn't been executed before by other bands. While the pace is brisk, the speed never exceeds that defined by a narrow corridor and adds to the overall impression of monotony - the band's worst enemy. Still, it is heavy metal and that in itself promises some excitement. - Ali "The Metallian"
