SLAUGHTER - SURRENDER OR DIE - UTOPIAN VISION
Fifteen years following its original appearance onto a fledgling Toronto scene, Canada's UVM has picked up the classic thirteen track demo of forerunners Slaughter and released it in CD format, hence making one of the most revered metal demos of all time available to a new generation. While not exactly alien to those who have heard Slaughter's eventual debut on their then-label Fringe, Surrender or Die is one hell of an album. This is not a CD to be reviewed, more like a dose of mega adrenaline death from 1995 to blast 'til armageddon. The sheer exuberant attack and violence captured in this noisy distortion - fest demonstrates again how many backward steps metal's taken since, and what the true spirit of heavy metal was meant to represent: speed, heaviness, aggression and little regard for the norm. Fans of Hellhammer, Celtic Frost, early Possessed, etc should get hold of this. Now is time for UVM to start looking forward and sign the metal sound of a new generation. - Ali "The Metallian"
