SOLDIER - SINS OF THE WARRIOR - HEAVY METAL
Soldier is a NWOBHM band that was formed as early as 1979, but has only now managed to issue a studio full-length. Talk about patience, perseverance or anticipation! Listen to Sins Of The Warrior and you will agree that most of these riffs probably stem from the '80s. Just the fact that the band has proper riffs is an indication in itself, but the structure and sound put out by Soldier is mostly vintage and heady British metal. There are too many slow songs and slower sections on this album, but the throaty vocals and the strong guitar work compensates significantly. I Still Believe, for example, is commercial and pedestrian, but Fire In My Heart is strong and ambitious, Walls Come Tumblin' Down begins like old Motörhead material, Natural High alternates between slow and heavy and Darkest Heart (one of the aforementioned slow songs) has dazzling guitars up and down the track. Then there is the strong title track with its involved and vintage sound and an instrumental section which probably would not be found on a modern band's album nowadays.
Soldier has seemingly changed its logo, but not its sound and consequently still waves the NWOBHM flag. It is amazing that bands like this still exist or come back and it is good to hear resurrected material that hearkens to the true sounds of the genre. - Ali "The Metallian"
