SOLFERNUS – NEOANTICHRIST – SATANATH
This one has it all: death metal, black metal and thrash metal. The band is unabashedly old school and proudly places its metallic underground sound and vibes on disc for the listener to… suffer and hopefully die. The thrashy riffs are accompanied by praises of death and disdain for religion, but the vocals are an acquired taste. They are not anywhere close to the deepest or most brutal, but they do have characters galore and clearly are preaching and preaching death and evil. Imagine Gollum spewing hate in overdrive. Sadly, the band bows to the obligatory and mandatory – it seems – trend and introduces instance of synthesizers, but those are thankfully isolated. The acoustic pieces are well composed and played, but also extracurricular and unneeded. Instead, let’s focus on the sinister vibe and tracks like Mistresserpent and Once upon A Time In The East, which if one listens carefully benefits from a Dissection riff. – Ali “The Metallian”
