TALAMYUS - ”¦IN THESE DAYS OF VIOLENCE - PRODISK
As ridiculous as Scandinavian bands are claiming Viking heritage and praising Thor whilst driving beat up Volvos and watching cable TV the news that a Canadian band has adopted a “Mighty Odin is on my side” mantra surely takes the cake. At least, being 'Viking metal' presumably takes the edge off the Saint Jean Baptiste celebrations.
The Montreal quartet does sound like Amon Amarth, Sweden’s mightiest - from a popularity angle anyway - Valhalla warriors, given the band’s mostly mid-paced chunky riffing and semi-growled vocals. With song titles like Punishable By Death, God Of War and Sealed In Blood these guys are not out to play nice, but there are a surprising number of Iron Maiden melodies interspersed throughout the album. Toughened up and sandwiched between bouts of brutal deathclubbing the Maiden medleys are nonetheless obvious especially if one has heard that band’s first two albums.
Talamyus is neither melodic nor too brutal and may ultimately be on to something, although for the band’s mark to improve beyond 'above average' it will need a little more excitement one way or the other and a thicker guitar sound next time around. - Ali “The Metallian”
