TOTAL WAR - WE ARE...TOTAL WAR - NECROPOLIS
Here is a strange release. Formerly known as War, the Swedish retro-thrash outfit (David Parland, It, All, Peter Tagtgren, the Swedish king, prime minister and a dozen other dignitaries) has changed monikers due to legal action by another band and re-released the band's first two releases on one disc - with several tracks missing!? Is this a compilation? If so, why after only two albums? Is it a repackaged release of the band's EP and LP? Then why the missing tracks. The label provided some clues by mentioning Parland's disputes with Necropolis over the last two years and how they did not support the band's 'beliefs expressed in the lyrical content herein'. Talk about saying something without saying anything. Who knew Necropolis has become such an adept diplomatic entity. What Necropolis is referring to, among other things, is lyrics like those on I Am Elite ('stay aside for the superior race...niggers and kikes stay away'), etc. Those lines were written by singer All. However, I recall a Black Mark employee relating once that Necrophobic debut's packaging, which featured Parland, was vetoed by label due to its racist content! Regardless, for those who have the War releases, this CD (repackaged and all) is useless. Fans of Destruction, Show No Mercy-era Slayer (the opening of 666 is so similar to Black Magic) and raw thrash might look into this - musically it's vicious. Here at the Metallian Towers we wonder what compromise between label and band has lead to this odd release. Incidentally there are conflicting reports on whether Total War is an ongoing concern. - Ali "The Metallian"
