WARFACE - INSANITY OF THE OBSESSED - DEATHQUAKE
Warface is an underground death metal band from California whose album was recorded a year ago and is now issued by a label called Deathquake. Before discussing the music one has to mention the utterly annoying and disruptive samples (the label calls them “audio stamps”) strewn in the middle of the songs, which are supposedly designed to stop pirating of the music. Another thing they stop is the enjoyment and the reviewing of the disc. How could you think annoying the reviewer is good business?
Past that not minor annoyance, we get to the music, which mixes Cannibal Corpse with Dying Fetus and more. The band is tight and brutally heavy, while the vocals go for that deep growl that has worked so often. It is a heavy combination, but somehow the fast parts work better than the guttural slow riffs. The leads are abundant, but one gets the impression that they do not live within the song. It is as if they were devised and recorded independent of the rest of the music. At least, Warface has solos, which is more than one can say about many other bands nowadays. As for the lyrics, well who really knows, but if these guys and gal are protesting the insanity of war then more power to them. - Anna Tergel
