WITHIN CHAOS - VIRULENT - KOCH
This is a 'sixty' or above average release for this genre. The band has a lot of what we would classify as metalcore in its music, but also loads of really crunchy music. Heavy riffs and little solos here and there to make it stand apart from the hordes of trendy boy bands. The problem, though, is that the band believes Hatebreed’s Perseverance is one of metal’s all-time best records. Seriously. The vocals are probably the most clichéd aspect of the whole affair with their screamed and growled duality. The snare sound could also have been heavier. Bring from Texas one inevitably finds some Pantera and Lamb Of God in the band’s sound. Yup, Virulent would work well in the moshpit and probably deliberately so. Heavy as hell and seriously pounding this is easily and thankfully more metal than core and hence one of the better bands of the much hated sub-genre. - Anna Tergel
