History & Biography The self-described progressive death metal band Adytum was formed in 2004 in the Toronto suburb of New Market. The group was initially the idea of Brendan Dean and bassist Ryan Lewis. The band recruited bassist Vukovic and signed with Northern Storm Records. The album was recorded in 2006 and released a year later. The band was also a player at the Canadian Music Week in March of 2007.
Reviews ADYTUM - ECHOES OF REFUGE - NORTHERN STORM
If Opeth is your weapon of choice, then Adytum is essential listening to keep you busy while Mikael Akerfeldt and crew ready a new record. Made up of three tracks that each span over 11 minutes and one 24 minute epic, Echoes Of Refuge plays like latter-day Opeth material to the point of possible copyright infringement (I kid, I kid). There’s really not much else to say about a band that emulates its worshipped idols so closely, but that’s not imply this a bad album in the least: it’s impressively written and well performed and if you’re an Opeth fan, there are no wrongs to be found here. On that note, I guess Adytum is sort of kindred spirits with Ektomorf, that band playing the Soulfly card more closely than even Soulfly itself. The low-ish grade reflects the blatant idol worship and not the damn fine effort enclosed. - David Perri
