History & Biography Amboy Dukes was the band of US right-wing gun lover/animal hunter Ted Nugent. The band was active between 1965 and 1975. There were too many line-up changes to name. Ted Nugent and singer John Drake came from a band called The Lourds. 1969 and later singer Rusty Day (also of Cactus) was shot dead at home in 1982. Nugent first formed the band in Chicago where he lived, borrowing the name from a Michigan band who, in turn, had borrowed it from a novel. He later reformed the band upon moving to Michigan.
Amboy Dukes was known for its sharp guitar licks. The band was at times known as Ted Nugent's Amboy Dukes and American Amboy Dukes (in Europe). Journey To The Center Of The Mind, off the debut album, was the band's best-known number. Survival Of The Fittest Live, which initially was meant to be one side live and one side of new studio albums, was recorded entirely live in Detroit. Dr. Sling Shot was a compilation in 1974. By this time, the band had become Ted Nugent and his backing band and billed as such.
Amboy Dukes reunited for the first time in more than 30 years for the annual Detroit Music Awards on April 17th and 18th, 2009 where the band was being presented the Distinguished Achievement award!
