History & Biography

Asagraum was founded by Obscura in the autumn of 2015. Membership stemmed from both The Netherlands and Canada. The all-girl band professed to black metal and the occult. Membership became fluid and people were hired and fired as names changed. A self-titled demo was distributed by Zwaertgevegt. The duo was Obscura and Canadian drummer Trish (who resided in Norway) and the two wrote and rehearsed in Finland. Despite Obscura's pseudonym, both were serial side-project members and active in a baker's dozen of acts simultaneously. All three demo songs appeared on the debut album, Potestas Magicum Diaboli. The act was booked for Rites Of The Black Mass 2017, Steelfest Open Air 2018, Meh Stuff! 2018 and played in Canada and Iceland.

The second album, entitled Dawn Of Infinite Fire, was supported through a video for the song Abomination's Altar. A. Morthaemer was on drums here, which meant that both members were Dutch now. Obscura reported not getting along with her former drummer whom she implied was not true. It also meant that both drummers had been in Sisters Of Suffocation. The band was active on the live circuit in Europe and more musicians, and ostensible tattoo models, came and went. One was Abyssic bassist Makhashanah who has been playing with the band live since the act's second show (the first was played as a duo). The group was booked for Darkness Guides Us Fest alongside Taake, Black Altar Kampfar, etc. in Glasgow, Scotland in November of 2020. Unfortunately, this was in the midst of the pandemic.

The band announced North and Central American touring for 2022. Cultus Profano was part of the line-up. The live record Rituals In The Dark Temple was taped in Mexico. The guest bassist was Mexican man Fernando León Cortés who also moonlighted in many projects like Hacavitz. A fourth album was taped in London, England. Veil Of Death, Ruptured was issued in October 2023. The two members appeared on the cover as Witte Wieven or the Dutch mythological wise women. Invoking Darkness Across Spain 2024 had Helleruin in tow. Meh Stuff! Winter Festival 2025 had the band booked for a revisit. Taake, Asagraum and Heimland were touring Europe in April 2025. The act was also booked for a show called Franconia In Black in 2025. Enisum and Asagraum announced the Veil Of Darkness co-headlining tour for the spring of 2026. Waldgeflüster and Convictive were to open. Belphegor, Krisiun and Asagraum booked a tour of Europe for September and October of 2026.

The band's name is inspired by a Sumerian male demon called Asag and the German word for 'room.' Obscura claims influence from true black metal, but had a keyboardist in tow for touring at one point. She is also a fan of Emperor. The act has been associated with the right-wing archetype. Obscura has referred to the "nanny state," which is presumably things like roads on which tour buses drive and in an interview with Crónicas Estigias webzine derided "keeping every genetically and intellectually degraded individual alive artificially on societies costs" and added that "every individual in my country should be able to take care of him/herself in a honourable way and respect the Dutch law and culture, or fuck off back to their own country." While her views are boilerplate Facebook feed right-wing stuff, at least she is atypical in having the strength to express an opinion in a scene full of wimps who call themselves black or death or whatever metal.
