Reviews AZKEN AUZI - INFERNUA - ARGONAUTA
Kept looking at the cover artwork for Infernua and went back and forth on whether it is likable or not. On the one hand, the colours are infernal and the scenery morbid. On the other hand, skulls on metal albums have been done to death. That is one of the many contradictions inherent in Infernua, an album that is heavy on bass with the distorted four strings crushing song after song, yet does not count a bass player among its members. Then there is the extreme metal album with song names like Deep Hell, Black Mass and From Hell, that includes Hollywood movie dubs like the one from Al Pacino in Scent Of A Woman.
It won't surprise anyone already familiar with the French duo that the sound is comparable to Grin, Crowbar and Dystopia. The band is slow, lurking, distorted nihilism, triggering a slow-moving flood of gargantuan and grinding riffs. The sound of a stomping brachiosaurus is a good analogy. Yes, the brachiosaurus of bands. The song SK goes into alternative mode. The guest vocals brought in for the song Reptilian - by Nico of a band called Voidozer - are frankly affected. Closing cut From Hell is an atmospheric (mostly) instrumental that likes its overdubs. The songs on the disc flow into one another with six of them running for 38 minutes.
Ultimately, the cover artwork ended up winning me over with its depressive atmosphere, but, despite the heaviness, it is still difficult to banish the suspicion that this is an ambient alternative album put to heavy distortion. - Ali "The Metallian"
