History & Biography Baby Tuckoo was formed by Neil Saxton and Paul Smith originally in the late '70s. The monicker was taken from the famous opening sentence of the novel A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man by Irish writer James Joyce, which reads, "Once upon a time and a very good time it was there was a moocow coming down along the road and this moocow that was coming down along the road met a nicens little boy named baby tuckoo..." The name "tuckoo" was simply a nickname for a person in the book. Early members were Steve Holton (vocals - later in Cyrka) and Andy Tidswell (keyboards - later in Verity). The band's 1984 Mony Mony single was produced by John Verity. Guitarist and producer John Verity was also from Bradford, England. Then Andy Barrott joined the band. Andy played keyboards/guitar and replaced keyboard player Andrew Tidswell (aka Andy Wells).
The band had an NWOBHM sound and vocally sounded like Whitesnake. The band was dropped by its label following the debut. A second album did emerge on a new label, namely Music For Nations. The sophomore album's opening cut was called Rock (Rock), which was included on, and became the title for, an EP next. The song was also a video clip for the band, which was filmed at the Marquee club in London. Armitage's departure to Accept in 1987 ended the band. Matters were not helped by Music For Nations also dropping the act from its roster.
The band had toured with co-headliner Chrome Molly just before disbanding.
