Reviews

BEWITCHER - SPELL SHOCK - CENTURY MEDIA
By law, Bewitcher may only be listened to with spikes, leather and a bullet belt. If he hasn’t already been crushed under the metallic artillery, anyone else shall be prosecuted by the lawman.
The band certainly has a touch of the olden Mausoleum Records’ bands topped with menacing vocals a la groups like Desaster, yet coupled with melody, and that certain bash metal that could come with Motörhead. The vocals are gruff, but largely comprehensible. Spell Shock begins with pounding drums like Bathory’s that mosh on no matter what is happening elsewhere in the track. It is mostly fast stuff, but, despite the speed metal tag, slows down as well. The music is not necessarily simple and immediate, but it is headbanging with a punk vibe enough as heard on the title track. Lavish Desecration has a folk-ish melody and a cool solo. The sneering vocals are right at home. Pagan Shadows (?) is an instrumental half of which sounds like the Trump voting banjo player in Deliverance is its guest musician. Ride Of The Ironfox gets the band back on track with an action packed and energetic end to the CD. What this band lacks is more extended solos, like the one on Out Against The Law, on a couple of more tracks. That would fit the band quite a bit. With that said, Bewitcher is a thrilling listen for a metal fan with a penchant for the underground. In other words, this band is for you if you are into wicked metal a la Bewitched or Witchery. - Ali “The Metallian”
