History & Biography
After seven years as Profugus Mortis the band became Blackguard in 2008. The band had entered a Nuclear Blast MySpace contest and upon obtaining a deal changed its monicker. Its debut came in 2009 and referenced the old name. The group opened for Ensiferum, Hypocrisy, Ex Deo and others in 2009. Ex Deo later recruited the band’s keyboardist. Gosselin was producing bands. The group opened another tour for Deicide, Belphegor, Neuraxis and others in 2010. A tour with Kamelot was next. Guitarist Louis Jacques joined in 2012 to replace Gosselin. The act toured with Soilwork in 2013. Dave Ablaze became the bassist in 2013. The band toured with Finntroll. Jacques left in 2015. Canada-based “melodic death/folk metal” band Blackguard announced its first show in over four years in 2019 as well as plans to independently release a demo called Storm in 2019 to follow its 2011 full-length Firefight on Victory Records and 2009’s Profugus Mortis released through Sumerian. The band was opening for Crimson Shadows in Toronto at the Coalition on March 22nd. The demo came in January 2020, which was many years after it was promised and, in fact, recorded. The act appeared in Montréal with Epica and The Agonist.

Canada-based death metal group Backstabber was hitting the road for select gigs across its home province of Quebec which included a performance at Festival Des Guitares Du Monde with Blinded By Faith and Blackguard in the summer. The last two bands were playing in Ottawa and Toronto. These were the band's first concerts since 2020. Keyboardist Jonathan Lefrançois-Leduc also returned to the fold in 2024 after leaving in 2010. Karkaos guitarist Vincent Harnois joined on bass. David Gagné became an official member on guitar.
