Reviews BLOODY FALLS - IV - ART GATES
Kindergarten and grade school teachers in Finland have a lot to answer for. Bloody Falls is chugging along in fine fashion when, suddenly, out of nowhere mid-album the keyboards kick in. One supposes they are Finns and cannot help it. Their genes, and elementary school curriculum, commands them to stop the Arch Enemy-meets-late Nevermore and Sylosis riffing and yank out the juvenile instrument. To be sure, there are background synthesisers before and after the song The Four, but the indoctrination takes over eventually and commands the band to go from serious metal contenders to an Alexandra Căpitănescu wannabe in a heartbeat. It is further ironic that a band hauls out its keyboards while singing about war.
Beyond that sad national cliche, Bloody Falls begins the album with precise Nevermore-like riffing and some heavy gruff vocals. The latter comes at the listener from multiple channels with the occasional effect, and some serious speed and double bass. Clearly, then, it is not all bad. Pestilence Is All I Need (why, Patrick Mameli thanks you) offers a surprisingly melodic solo. Enter The Mourn, likewise, delivers sharp riffing and a hard bass sound. Doomed To Repeat has a nice speed and attack to it that proves the band can be serious and pounding when it wants to and the album ends with Black Death, which has it all: soloing, impressive bass and hellish chanting… and the synthesisers. The band's drummer, and for that matter other members, have energy to spare and do not run out of gas here.
Otherwise, Be My Own Grave is a thought provoking title and Mother, Your Son Is Bleeding offers surprisingly moralistic lyrics not to mention a very fast and welcome drum rattle. It is a long album that offers quantity as well with its eleven tracks. - Ali "The Metallian"
