History & Biography
The band was founded in the spring of 2000 and lasted 8 years. Like all bands, it returned. Then the act split up again in 2010. The next return was 2012. Singer and guitarist Chris Ojeda, guitarist Tony Rohrbough and bassist Chris "Cid" Adams had a self-titled demo in 2000. Pieces Of The Empire was the 2002 demo. The band's webmaster gave Lamb Of God drummer Chris Adler the demo. He invited the group to open a show in Virginia, which led to a small East Coast USA tour. Another demo came in 2003 and the band signed to DK Entertainment. The label went out of business before anything could be released however. Byzantine signed with Prosthetic Records - thanks to Lamb Of God - instead, but DK would sell the band's 2003 demo rights to Crash Music, which surprised the band. The act and the (new) label had to negotiate a last-minute agreement after some back and forth. The band opened for Lamb Of God again in 2004 and also appeared at the New England Hardcore And Metal Festival. God Dethroned, Byzantine, Nightrage, Epoch Of Unlight, Hell Within and Lilitu comprised the roster of the International Extreme Music Festival North American tour in the autumn of 2005. Multiple shows were cancelled by the band over the years however. The January 2008 breakup came mere days after the release of Oblivion Beckons.

After reformation, Byzantine was again the title for a demo - this one in 2013. To Release Is To Resolve was the 2015 demo. This led to a contract with Metal Blade. Sacred Reich: 30 Years Of Ignorance North America Tour had Byzantine as opener in 2017. The group was billed at Full Terror Assault Open Air in the USA in 2019. Drummer Wolfe died in 2021. This was blamed on his addiction. Live From Trident Music Facility was a 2022 demo, as was Black Sea Codex. USA-based groove thrashers Byzantine had an album called Harbingers again through Metal Blade Records in 2025. OJ had relinquished the guitar as of 2025. There was a video for the song Floating Chrysanthema. There were several East Coast USA gigs set up, but the New York City one got cancelled.
