History & Biography Candiria, whose monicker was made up, was founded by singer Carley Coma, guitarists Chris Puma and Eric Matthews and bassist, drummer, trumpet player Kenneth Schalk in 1992. Candiria liked to mix diverse styles such as metal, hardcore and jazz. The band was on a Radical Records' sampler featuring crossover metal/HC bands covering hip hop.
The C.O.M.A. Imprint was a self-cover version album in 2002. It was a new version of Beyond Reasonable Doubt. The band's European tour of 2002 was a mess with conflicting schedules, lack of promotion and an audience and so was cut short. In the summer of 2002, Candiria was involved in a van crash in Ohio, USA on the way to a gig in Albany, NY. The band's van was hit by a truck from behind and rolled over. Several band members were injured and hospitalized as a result. The band's next album (What Doesn't Kill You... ) cover featured a photograph of the act's van after the accident. John LaMacchia quit, as a result, but would return. Eric Matthews would quit the band eventually due to the effects of the accident. Drummer Kenneth Schalk was the next to leave. What Doesn't Kill You... was licensed to Earache in Europe. The band won a $29 million verdict for injuries suffered following the accident. This, however, was subject to a repeal. At one juncture in 2009, Carley Coma and John LaMacchia were the two remaining members. Coma was also in the Christian band, Hope Kills Fear. Original guitarist Chris Puma died in 2009. Schalk returned, but not for long.
Candiria signed with Metal Blade Records in 2015. The result was the While They Were Sleeping album of 2016. While They Were Sleeping was supported through multiple videos going in-depth about the record. The band, and openers, Westfield Massacre, toured the USA in 2017. The group played on the Vans Warped Tour in 2017. Robert Corbino was the live bassist here. Candiria conducted a Beyond Reasonable Doubt 20th anniversary tour 21 years after the original release.
The band has called its music 'urban fusion.'
Reviews CANDIRIA - THE PROCESS OF SELF-DEVELOPMENT - MIA
I wish this band lots of commercial success, and all the hash, weed and whatever other designer drugs their hearts desire. Otherwise I wish bands like this and other Korn/ Coal Chamber-junior wanna-bes would leave me alone. As if Korn and their trendy ilk weren't bad enough, here come this bunch who mix it up with more ambient and hip hop influences to make for the utter fusion of everything I despise. How can the ears of anyone who has been exposed to the grace and majesty of heavy metal tolerate this? - Ali "The Metallian"
