COMPULSORY - ...AND THE DEATH OF VANITY - VALHALLA/VOW
What does one make of a band that features a photo of a buck naked male on its biography? No, not that they must be Pantera under another name, but that with a previous name like Gorecunt these bastards must be out to disturb the shit. No matter what, courtesy of upstart Valhalla Records, comes this five-piece who sport the obligatory goatee/short hair/tough mo fo image, and you know what? They sound it too. They are not all loser, all the time; but their crunch comes damn close at times. For one, they specialize in the kind of power riffs that has made the likes of Machine Head and Meshuggah household names. Although the band injects enough independent thought and class to validate its existence. For another, the band is sexually-themed. Furthermore, the lead guitar flashes on Male Thoughts and Animals Of Leisure profess talent and they do include a photograph of a femme fatale to boot.
On the vocal front, the singer is like the occasions when David Vincent would get stupid and silly in Morbid Angel, as in the songs Where The Slime whatever, etc. That is exactly how phlegmy Verbal Agitator Morten Edgardo Rieks sounds. Listen to the song To Be, And Die (great title) for a prime example of this. Reverb time, boys?
Grow some hair, dump the run-of-the-mill nose rings, inject a little more heavy metal into your repertoire and I will give you a much better review next time. - Ali "The Metallian"
