History & Biography Formed in Dormagen, Germany in winter of 1997 by vocalist/rhythm-guitarist Onielar and drummer Ariovist with lead guitarist Velnias (also in Bethlehem from 2019 to 2025) joining soon, Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult established itself with raw and traditional black metal. The Pest Called Humanity was the 1999 demo. Drummer Ariovist left and the band was still without a permanent bassist. The debut full-length demo, Follow The Calls For Battle (2001), showcased an uncompromising style, rooted in 1990s Scandinavian black metal. This demo was given the rerelease treatment through Propaganda two years later. With Horrn on drums the band gave a first concert on March 16th, 2002. Launched independently, Nocturnal March (2004) earnt the band a slot on the 2005 European Black Metal Attack mini-tour alongside Sauron and Fluisterwoud. Hora Nocturna arrived in 2006, self-released at first and recorded at Soundsight Studio. That same year, former Bethlehem frontman Andreas “Necropest” Classen briefly joined as bassist. Gallhammer, Denial Of God and Darkened Nocturn Slaughtercult were conducting a mini-tour of Europe in 2007.
The act signed with War Anthem Records in 2009 and released Saldorian Spell, followed by Necrovision in 2013. The act was booked for both Metalfest Open Air Germany and Austria in 2011. Purgatory singer and guitarist René Kögel joined on bass in 2019. The sixth album, Mardom (2019), was on the same label. Live, the band’s stage presence and corpse paint has been mentioned: at Sequane Fest 2015, Onielar performed in white, spotlight amid a pentagram backdrop and the band then was noticeable at 2024’s Black Hole Fest Germania II. The band was also booked for Party.San Open Air in 2024 having played there in 2011 and 2017. The band was scheduled to appear at Underground For The Masses II on April 4-5, 2025. Nigredo Records would re-release Follow The Calls For Battle, Nocturnal March and Hora Nocturna as digipak CDs in 2025. Tyyn (Sodom) became the concert drummer in 2025. The act was booked for Brazl's Setembro Negro 2025.
Onielar’s 2021 battle with breast cancer - resulting in double mastectomy and chemo - ended in full recovery. She has also fronted Bethlehem since 2016. Despite past accusations of far-right sympathies, which the band has since denied, the lyrical themes focus on Satanism, occultism, death, darkness and misanthropy. The band claims the lyrics are earnest.
