History & Biography The thrash, metalcore and groove act Devilz By Definition was founded in 2010 and the songs it uploaded, The Fall Of A King or The Rape Of A Czar, did not endear it to the monarchist crowd. Bruce Munro had the idea for a band as early as 2003, but it wasn't until 2008 when he had actually picked up a guitar! The band was offered a gig in 2010 and scrambled to write songs and complete its line-up. Still, the gig proceeded without a bassist. Early drummer Shawn Mailloux switched to vocals soon before leaving the band several years later to focus on his hip hop project. The founding members were labourers at a roofing company at that time.
The 'rape' demo had drummer James Ditty play on it. CDN Records released an album called The Devilution in 2016. Not atypically, this was basically someone pressing a few CDs of a band's demo. Windsor, Canada-based Devilz By Definition had a demo called The Bitter Remains Of Human Consumption in the spring of 2021. Lost Days was the 2023 demo. This one was a compilation of unreleased material from the last decade and was issued in honour of bassist Mat Dobbin (who had been the guitarist and had swapped roles with Couvillion) who had died on October 24th 2023. Guitarist Jamie Couvillion switched to vocals as well. This had become necessary as the band's singer Josh was being flaky. A couple of bassists came and went. The band was at the Wacken Metal Battle in Hamilton in 2025.
Windsor, Canada-based thrash band Devilz By Definition announced a release called Devilz Knight for June 2026. The song Alien was about Mat Dobbin. The band reported that, "Devilz By Definition are family - bound to each other and to their fanbase" and yet the line-up had changed over several times over the years. Many of the changes were due to drug use. Others have left due to work, parenthood or general flakiness.
