Reviews ETXALE APIO - FURIA ANIMAL - ART GATES
There is a fair level of respect for hardcore's mentality and original intentions here. Still, fact remains that it is not a favourite genre for the knights at Metallian Towers. Good thing that the ferocious Spaniards insert a fair bit of metal musically - the melodic guitars - on top of the heavy riffs, which is a surprise. As misleading as it may be, even the cover artwork tilts metal. Yet, the simple riffs, speedy notes and, above all, chanting vocals scream 'hardcore' from start to finish. My bet is that the band has a few things to say lyrically as well. Speaking of which, the words are Spanish. This may be a turn-off for some, but traditionally this has not been an automatic concern for this writer. After all, albums like (say) Warning's II, which was sung in French, or Loudness' Disillusion, which was originally released in Japanese, are among my favourites. It should be fair to say that many metal fans agree with the sentiment, but there is likely a majority that would not abide by Spanish lyrics outside Spanish speaking territories.
Furia Animal is true to its name with a hefty chord driven sound. That is indeed a beefy sound for the most part. The hardcore and chant-oriented vocals are a let down and they come out of multiple channels. The title track proves the band can solo, insert a modicum of smoothness and retain the aggression. Ni Un Paso Atrás contains outright heavy metallic riffing and pounding drums. The chanting and yelling is continuous, but the music is crossover rather than handcore. Makes me think they put the worst track at the beginning of the CD. The biography mentions that the act has become more metallic over the years, the lyrics harbour "a strong social commitment" and kudos for that. The band, in hardcore style, may in fact have a few things to say, but even that advantage has been negated for me owing to the Spanish lyrics. A Sangre Fria has a touch of Iron Maiden. The final track Bastardos is more purely hardcore albeit with some soloing. There you have it. The right album for the right fan, but too hardcore for this writer with the chanting vocals especially not sitting right. One last thing, the drum sound may be heavy, but the cymbals are a write-off on the whole record. - Ali "The Metallian"
