History & Biography
Most know Golden Earring for their 1973 hit single Radar Love from the Moontan album of 1973. This explains why most are unaware that the band has existed since the early sixties (1961 actually) as a pop band. In fact, The Hague-based band had scored several successes on the Dutch charts in the early sixties. A 1968 hit is called Dong-Dong-Di-Ki-Di-Gi-Dong.

The heavy rock band was formed out of the ashes of The Tornadoes by Kooymans and Gerristen - two of the most tenacious musicians on this planet. Hay joined the band in 1967 and the band's sound seemed to take a turn for harder realms. Drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk joined in 1969. The classic line-up of the band played shows with Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, Rush and more. Kiss and Aerosmith opened for the band. The band signed to Track Records for Moontan. The label was managed by managers for The Who and that band and Golden Earring had toured the UK together in 1972.

The 1976 album contraband was issued in the USA as Mad Love. This record was also the fans’ introduction to guitarist Eelco. The Dutch band maintains a following world-wide to this day. They have toured the world with The Who, Rush and Santana among others. The band had another international hit on both sides of the Atlantic with Twilight Zone in 1982, but again faded from the mainstream.

Golden Earring and drummer Zuiderwijk joined approximately 1,000 drummers to play the song Radar Love on the Maasvlakte in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. 2000's Last Blast Of The Century is a compilation which further features several of the band's earlier members.

Incredibly, the band released a live video in 2002 entitled Don't Stop The Show and recorded a new album due for release in 2003. The Millbrook U.S.A. album was named after where the band recorded it. The band continued to gig heavily. The ‘naked’ albums were acoustic recordings. Tits 'N Ass of 2012 was released by Universal. You Know We Love You! featured the band’s last show, which took place in Rotterdam on 16.11.2019. It was released as a CD and DVD.

George Kooymans was announced as ill with ALS in 2021, which lead to the band’s dissolution. As usual, the last show was not and the only thing that would stop bands from returning was death. The band announced another final show in January of 2025. Golden Earring: One Last Night was scheduled for the Rotterdam Ahoy for 30th of January 2026. Kooymans was not to play, but guest artists were to perform with the band and five Euros from each ticket sold were to be allocated to ALS research. Four more shows were added due to demand. Kooymans died on 22nd July 2025 at the age of 77.
