History & Biography Active since 2010, the avantgarde band was first heard through the Candlesmoke EP of 2012. The band was singer and guitarist Ruben Wijlacker, guitarist, bassist and piano man Tjebbe Broek and Bas Van Der Perk on drums. The band then issued a demo called Waerachtighe Beschryvinghe Van Drie Seylagien, Ter Werelt Noyt Soo Vreemt Ghehoort in 2014. It dealt with the story of the explorer, Willem Barentsz. Grey Aura was booked for Into Darkness Festival 2016. Further demos were 1: Gelige, Traumatische Zielsverrukking and 2: De Bezwijkende Deugd. The act was billed at Roadburn Festival 2019.
The colours on the Zwart Vierkant album of 2021 were reminiscent of the colours on 1: Gelige… Film, ambient, pop and artsy fans would be delighted to hear that the members deployed keyboards, Spanish guitar, foley and of course trumpet and trombone. It dealt with a novel called De Protodood In Zwarte Haren. Zwart Vierkant: Slotstuk was issued in 2025 and was centred on the second half of the aforementioned novel. This one was not a letdown at all. It added cello and tuba to the trombone. The cover artwork rekindled its love for coloured objects.
The band and the scene call themselves "black metal," but the style and the band are unrelated.
