History & Biography It is not often that a group’s failure is pinned on the cover for a particular album, but that is the story with Hammerschmitt. One of the two bands with this monicker from Germany, this particular act was founded in central West Germany in 1984. A self-titled demo appeared in 1984. Rockport Records, whose biggest act was Trance, signed the band and had the group in the studio in early 1985. The result was the act’s sole record. The cover photograph gave the impression that the act is a comic one with guitarist Zorro now a wrestler. Alternate conspiracy theories - no doubt from future MAGA fans - had the cover artist pegged as Eddie Van Halen-gone-kato. That was the end except two members flew over to Falcon Prey. It was rumoured that the band would reform in 2008 after several years of solo efforts, but nothing transpired.
Karthago Records compiled the band’s music into one release, gave it a new cover that looked like a Viking coronavirus about to climb a staircase to reach its beloved German cheese, in 2009. Golden Core reverted to the original cover for the vinyl reissue in 2023.
Andreas would write music for Grave Digger in the 1990s.
