History & Biography
The hard 'n heavy Bogotá-based (by way of Medellin) Kraken, named after a giant sea monster, was founded in 1984. The band proceeded to record and release a debut single after collecting 500 signatures from people committing to buying the single. A self-titled album appeared in 1987. The song titles and lyrics were in Spanish. The line-up was singer Elkin Ramírez, guitarists Hugo Restrepo and Ricardo Posada, bassist Jorge Atehortúa and drummer Gonzalo Vasquez. The album amazingly went on to sell over 100,000 copies. Kraken II, III, etc. followed. The chain was broken with 1999's Una Leyenda Del Rock!, which unusually had followed its predecessor by four years. II featured one guitarist as Ricardo Posada was gone. III went commercial and added keyboardist Jaime Ochoa. IV displayed further commercial ambitions with choirs and wind instruments. Only singer Ramirez and bassist Jorge Atehortúa were left standing however. V assembled a new line-up and again featured a keyboardist. By this time, the band was in pop and blues territory. Huella Y Camino was a live album recorded at various concerts. By now even bassist Jorge was gone and a revolving cast of characters included bassist Luis Ramírez.

Cliche occurred when the band recorded and issued Kraken Filarmónico, which was the band playing its tune alongside an orchestra, in this case the Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra. The band would return to the symphonic well more times. More cliches included an anniversary DVD called La Fortaleza Del Titán - 30 Años: 1984-2014 in 2014. Kraken VI: Sobre Esta Tierra followed its predecessor by seven years. Singer Elkin Ramírez and sole original member died of cerebral edema (a swelling of the brain due to the accumulation of fluids) in 2017. He was 54. THe dead man was acknowledged by the Colombian president at this time. Of course, the rest of the gang continued. The members recruited a female singer and forged on. Acústico was a live album. Several members regrouped in Titán Even more members regrouped in Titánika..

Colombia-based Kraken was returning to Europe for a tour of France and Spain in 2026. It was dubbed the El Rugido Del Kraken 2026 and followed the act's first European appearance in 2025. The band was also touring Latin America.

There are bands called Kraken in most countries recognized by the United Nations. Former singer Ramírez was in a film called La Etica De Cain in 2008.
