History & Biography
Norway-based Mortem was founded in 1987 as a shining example of early death metal and released a demo called Slow Death in 1989. France-based underground label Putrefaction Records pressed it on vinyl as a single. The band was singer and drummer Marius Vold, guitarist and bassist Steinar Johnsen and drummer Hellhammer. Marius Vold handed the drums to Hellhammer, but the act dissolved with members seeding other Norwegian underground acts. All three were also overlapping in Arcturus. That band, like Mortem, had keyboards. Members would also join Covenant.

The band aimed to regroup in the 1990s, but it was only in 2018 that the official reformation occurred. Bassist Tor Stavenes was new to the fold. Peaceville Records uploaded a song called Ravnsvart in 2019. It was the title track for the band's debut record. The 2022 release Slow Death was half the old demo and half a self-cover version exercise.

Norway-based Mortem had an album called Mørketid in 2026. It was released through Peaceville Records in July of 2026. Nagash (Covenant The Kovenant) as our new session bass player and Jeremie Malezieux (Dizmal, Dr. Incinerator, Feversea, etc.) joined for live work. The band was booked for the Orgvim Satanicvm VI in January of 2027.
