Reviews MYLINGEN - DET INRE MÖRKRET - ELASTICSTAGE
The problem with Det Inre Mörkret ('The Inner Darkness') is not so much that it is bad. The issue is that it is neither my style nor special enough. There are a million bands roaming the land and this one is an average effort from two musicians. It is better than the flood of solo acts, which Mylingen itself once was, but is not a full band either. Thankfully, the bio's threat that the band borrows from and leans into space rock and progressive rock does not really bear fruit, although there are synthesisers and drum machines here as far as bothersome elements go.
The duo does a fair enough job of its doom/death, and the growls are fairly convincing, but if that is what the publicist refers to as "progressive" then I have news for her. Well, no one knows what's what anymore and everything is automatically tagged 'progressive' so we can safely ignore that and just be thankful that the bio, at least, skipped calling this the standard issue 'black metal' or 'blackened.' Hell, progressive music should be virtuosic and show off the musicianship and this album suffers a drum machine!
What else? The titles are in Swedish and the melodies, softer passages and keyboards give it an air of gothic music. There is a dreamy quality to the music sometimes. No wonder the band cites In The Woods… as an influence. - Anna Tergel
