NECRONOCLAST - THE PLAGUE - MORIBUND
Most one-man bands are worth little (see Burzum), but Moribund Records’ Scottish band Necronoclast (a.k.a. Greg) is a powerful entity with a thing or 666 to say musically. Most recent newcomers from this label have been slower doomy affairs, which makes it unsurprising that the same applies to The Plague. Ironically, the album’s opener Degeneration is a fast and furious track. The band is not as dissonant as Averse Sefira, as furious as Kult Ov Azazel or as retarded as Burzum, but nestled somewhere in the vicinity of these names, albeit with a heavy touch of doom metal. The highlight of the whole things is the vocals, which verifiably sound like a wild beast ravaging its prey 100,000 years ago. On the down side, this being a one-man band, the drum machines are noticeable, annoying and of course cheap. This is still an average album overall, but why would a band believe anyone would care to get into a cheap affair when there are actual options out there where the artists have put real effort into the whole thing. Moreover, most songs start with the same sound, note and pattern. That is inexcusable. - Anna Tergel
