Reviews

NETHERDOM - FORSAKING, FORSEEKING - AMOR FATI
Oftentimes, an album’s cover artwork could tell one quite a bit. This pattern is even more pronounced in heavy metal. Just look at Suffocation’s Hymns From The Apocrypha or Cobra Spell’s 666 just to cite two recent examples. Forsaking, Forseeking’s cover artwork of a nebulous cosmic dust and dark matter points at vast, mysterious and shadowy astral metal and that is what the France-based act delivers.
The music that is simple and dares the listener to call it elementary is dirty, raw, lo-fi, suitably monotonous to the point of being hypnotic, free of synthesizers and deliberately noisy. It is odd to term such an explosion of raw noise and terror ‘monotonous’ or ‘hypnotic,’ but there it is. Comparisons to mid-period Enslaved, Ulver, Hyl or Bâ'a would not be inappropriate. The sole member wishes to remain anonymous, but who is to say that Netherdom is not unrelated to the aforementioned Bâ'a? The album of 40 minutes is comprised of three tracks and the harmonious swift melodies are topped - or is that grounded? - by evil and gruff vocals from the nether regions hell. Ironically, a spoken Woodman quotation on the song In The Depths Of The Fog is,to the best of my knowledge, taken from Twin Peaks, which is as mainstream as anything. The song is the album’s more powerful with crackling noise and anguish. The title for the 20-minute+ To Forsake Remnants Of An Existence Bereft Of Meaning could be the mantra of nihilistic existentialism incarnate with its vocals particularly sounding as if tormented in hell. The album is one for the beholden to the second wave and devoted and nobody else. - Ali “The Metallian"
