Metallian Demos

Talk about a surprise improvement! The new demo by England's Malefic is not only better than its predecessor (reviewed on these pages several months ago), but also a great death metal CD in its own right.
The Malefic boys take the sounds of Florida death metal and Carcass and inject quite a bit of traditional metal sounds in order to come up with something stimulating and appealing to most metal fans. Sure, this damned thing is still pretty brutal and underground, but the quality of the material should speak for itself. The sound is good, the menacing dual-vocal style a la Carcass really works here, the solos are well-executed, the drums hit the cymbals in all the right places and the bass guitar comes with a mighty distortion. Having said that, Inner Sanctum comes a bit too close to Carcass for comfort and one could have done without the clean backing vocals on Leading The blind which is a bit too trendy right now.
Nevertheless, why not give this a chance by, not sampling, downloading it for free from For information e-mail the band at or at - Ali "The Metallian"

Switzerland's former thrashers Lunacy has been doing the sounds since 1988 and, with different line-ups, has had a half dozen official releases. N.I.N.E. itself was originally intended for release through a record company. The label managed to go broke before the release and the Swiss band decided to go ahead and record and release the CD independently. Perhaps as a result, the disc is quite professional in attitude, presentation, sound and songwriting.
This band is next to impossible to classify. The disc kicks off with a melody a la Rush, and proceeds to weave in and out of progressive rock, thrash metal, heavy metal and rock music. The singer, if anything, is more versatile than the music and convincingly alters his voice from soft to aggressive and everything in between. The lack of focus is the band's Achilles heel, but the band is obviously keen on its style and certainly goes at it with conviction. Either write to the band at Felsenrainstrasse 12, CH-8052 Zürich Switzerland or at - Ali "The Metallian"

If Satan has to be destroyed, then she clearly needs a bigger adversary than this project. The Texas-based act has released this six-song, fourteen-minute CD to propagate its "bass driven metal..." which is to say the songs are comprised of vocals and a loud and distorted bass guitar. This is very DIY, which is always commendable, but a guitar (although truth be told one is listed here), drums and more variety might have worked charmingly. Then again, a new demo called Take no Prisoners is imminent. This is extremely basic white metal that is hopefully leading to better things. Visit for more information. By the way, why does the band photo depict Rock, the founder, raising the devil's horns? - Ali "The Metallian"

The Italian band Scala Mercalli (don't know!) was formed as early as 1992 which is a damn long time ago. It is sad that most people probably have not heard of the band for there is some real good heavy metal here. The demo has four cuts on it with the last track being a decent cover of Iron Maiden's Be Quick Or Be Dead. The music is 100% heavy metal, the singer is a mix between Bobby Blitz of Overkill and a shrill version of the old Jacobs Dream singer. Scalla Mercalli is hardly the most original heavy metal band out of Italy, but that is surely beside the point when the metal is so undiluted, the songs so cool and the hair so long (well mostly). Write to the either at or visit - Sheila Wes Det

VALAK - same
It is amusing to read how many line-up changes Italy's Valak has had in the short four years it has been around. The net result of all the upheaval is the current disc which is a brooding, melancholic and certainly harmonic metal rather like Katatonia, Vintersorg and Borkanagar. The songs are long - there are four songs and the CD lasts over 30 minutes - and the band takes its time to build a lot of disparate parts into each track. Another noteworthy aspect of this band is the powerful guitar and vocal sound the band's achieved in the studio. The drum sound in contrast could probably use a little hand next time. Valak can occasionally get quite aggressive so check into this young band. E-mail or visit to read more. - Anna Tergel

When was the last time someone sent in a 70s-influenced heavy rock demo CD into Metallian towers for review? Safe to say, it has been a while.
The Greek band Nocta, according to the supplied biography, is launching a new career with this demo. This style's commercial potential is clearly dubious, although the time travellers are so good at what they do it's almost scary. Molten heavy riffs, melodic vocals, sombre atmosphere and a penchant for nostalgic melodies will make the last remaining heavy rockers come out of wherever they are. For Nocta speaks directly to fans of the Sabs, Blue Oyster Cult and Jethro Tull. Bonus points: the sarcasm of the band's biography! Get in touch with the band either via or - Ali "The Metallian"
