CONCRETE FUNERAL - ULTIMUM JUDICIUM
The bio reveals that the 2015 formed Calgary, Canada quartet are for fans of "Death (the band)". One can safely presume that no one involved with the band endorses the concept or act of dying. Ultimum Judicium begins with the title track which happens to be an intro. Speak Of The Devil takes a minute to truly launch, the launch is impressive however. Speedy somewhat dated thrashing with sold vocals pleases ears. Exodus is one possible comparison. (Swedish) death metal lurks within the thrash too. Drown takes a few second to launch too, a thrash and death mix that for once shows bios can be truthful and not made up clichés or hyperbole. The 80s Overkill-esque guitars and solo bring back nostalgic feelings. Devin Schum is not a Bobby Blitz type singer though. He, more than the instruments, provides a death metal edge. The 80s Overkill influence becomes more apparent on Holo-Comb. Code Adam features vintage thrashing riffs at the start and includes both a metal solo and speedy death metal blasts. Toxic Fuck starts slower but doesn't miss much. The simpler riffs still deliver, so do the drumming and singing. Mattress Stains has a Slayer-ish start and its lyrics plead with a whore to close her legs and slurp up the jizz that she clearly and desperately wants. Clearly someone is very angry at her. Carnival Of Contradictions has Schum screaming his lungs out and the band, every instrument including himself on rhythm guitars, ably keeping up in an extended instrumental section. The closer is called Stabbed To Death is as impressive and the songs before and once again Jesse Lindbeck, Paul Mercer and Connor Erhart impress.
