Metallian Demos

The prolific Warren Appleby is back with his fourth instrumental disc which shows how he is gaining in confidence the more discs he releases. The album is his hardest and most organic sounding. The samples intro is maddening and is apparently from the film, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers. The first track proper is the title track which has a heavy groove with a pronounced cymbal sound. It is soon clear that the new demo has both more and more intricate guitars. This is one of the two most impressive tunes on this 8-track/20-minute demo. Retro Rocket is almost complete just begging for vocals. The good riffing and rocking guitars with interesting twists really comes together on this track. This could have been on an Avenger LP from the NWOBHM days. Strange Daze is a strange number with some acoustic work. I don't drink rum, but if I did I would take this with me to Coba Cabana. Goblins reminds me of When The Levee Breaks for whatever reason. The tune smacks of that era perhaps even though it is fairly straightforward. The demo ends with Quicksilver which is similar to the title track in that its melodies could have even come from iron Maiden. The guitar jabs and the melodies underneath would have been fabulous with a sterling production and some blazing vocals.
Warren is a busy man as demonstrates. It is worth a visit to check his collection of songs and admire the sense of adventure. - Ali "The Metallian"

The guys from The Green Evening Requiem (or their chief promoter Evan) are some of the most professional and courteous musicians on the independent music scene. Perhaps not coincidentally these traits are reflected in the band's music. The band's music is not my personal favourite style of 'metal', but the band's consistent effort, both publicity-wise and musically, has to earn them converts. The band's multi-tiered, layered and complex music speaks for itself of course, but one naturally roots for affable people. The Pennsylvania-based band would probably cite Pink Floyd, Opeth or Dan Swanö's more offbeat work as influences even though the myriad of soundscapes along the 60-minute disc - featuring new and older songs - are more diverse than the description conveys. The demo features music that can come across as alternative, garage rock, heavy metal, pensive, melodic or aggressive. That can be construed as criticism where metal fans are concerned (see my earlier comments regarding my personal feeling); still there is certainly enough here to warrant an inclusion on Metallian of course. Moreover, the amount of enigmatic ability is noteworthy in an independent band.
There can be no doubt that The Green Evening Requiem will be signed. That is a foregone conclusion. For my tastes, a better sound, less prosaic singing and a more metal attitude are in order. More importantly, The Green Evening Requiem should keep doing what it is doing for it is certainly unto something different and special. is where one can find more information. - Ali "The Metallian"

Boy, get past the strictly amateurish cover art and the messy colours and you will find a four song demo packed to the rafters with great thrash metal like Sodom would deliver in the '80s on albums like Persecution Mania and Agent Orange. Those were the days of heralded and unbridled wicked thrash and Italy's Death Mechanism goes about its business with a straightforward conviction that begs to be blasted out loudly. The band also incorporates a little Slayer and Kreator into its list of influences. The trio has even obliged the listener with rippingly fast solos. What else do you need? For more information write to or the band at - Ali "The Metallian"

Extinction Agenda is the latest band of former December Wolves' man Voltanix. The band is clearly inspired by the early days of death and thrash metal. Those were the days when the innovative sounds of Razor, Sacrifice, Slayer and Dark Angel ruled the scene. The band is just a duo at the moment, but that apparently has not deterred the sound. The three songs on disc are full of hatred and venom, spewing vicious evil with a sense of vintage sincerity. The lyrics are enigmatic and hardly the stuff of trendy musings. Contact the band at or visit for information. - Ali "The Metallian"

A Swiss quintet formed in 1999 promoting their 2003 five song EP in 2005 and all that when they have newer releases advertised in their biography!? The five songs can be best described as rock with attitude, or kick ass rock ‘n’ roll as they would like it to be known. Backwash is a mix of AC/DC and American rock, with a sound not too far away from Poison, Thin Lizzy and The Counting Crows. Titles like Highroller, Kill Thrill and One More Dollar are decent indicators but this is not exactly metal. Still, give it a hard rocking shot at or email - Anna Tergel

Exsecrator is either a Spanish or an Italian band and Vehemence Of Human Displeasure is the band's third demo. The band's biography emphasizes the band's influences as mainly from Floridian death metal, as well as Cryptopsy and Nile. In reality, the quintet of Gian, Mayler, Fausto, Nicolo and Ale come across as Incantation circa Onward To Golgotha - complete with the muddy sound and deep growling. The band's dedicated underground approach to death metal is appreciated of course, but a clearer sound and a better drummer are also in order. This being the band's third release it is time for the band to get past the weak sound. As things stand, Vehemence is only for the strict die-hard into mid-paced underground brutality. The band can be reached through - Ali "The Metallian"

Maladaptive is formed by ex-members of Heavenly, the trio seem to go to great lengths to insist that they formed this new group to get away from the ‘Euro speed metal’ of the former and back to their original love of traditional thrash and heavy metal. The opening self-titled song of this four track demo CD does immediately bring to mind the mid ‘80s thrash sound and comes complete with chorus and somewhat high pitched vocals, however as the song progresses the vocals get more growl-like and there is even an hint of background synthesizers. Burn The Witches follows and is decidedly more dated and sounds more what one might expect to hear from TT Quick or some older power metal release. Monster is much the same and easily fits a 1985 power metal release. Traitor tries to incorporate a few modern riffs but is basically a heavy metal song that while solid is not very original. Fans of Heavenly should be curious, others might check out a heavier metal. - Anna Tergel

Infernal Angels is a black metal band from Italy whose new demo features four songs, one of which is an Immortal cover. The band's influences, screeched vocals and subject matter belie the act's use of melody in all its compositions. The band has fast parts and is obviously extreme - imagine a more melodic Dissection - but is more about creating moods and fantasies within a melodic mid-paced environment than blazing at 666kph. The mature songwriting and imagery make Infernal Angels an obvious candidate for a recording contract. For my personal purposes though the trio should banish the use of keyboards and refrain from recording other band's material - especially at the demo stage where its makes no sense whatsoever. Contact the band via or visit for more information. - Ali "The Metallian"
