Metallian Demos

Shattered hails from the western English town of Bristol and plays a harsh style of speed/death metal. The vocals scream and yell with evil intent, the guitars maintain different tones and have a few neat tricks on the go and the rhythm section pulses incessantly culminating in a music that is both intense and quite busy. The sound of the demo is quite good and so is the artwork. Is there any downside to the demo then? The answer is yes. Singer Louis Barnes tires of the intensity on the nine-minute long song Purgatory and breaks into clean singing which is real trendy and, therefore, inexcusable and, as importantly, not done well to begin with. Apart from this offending mid-section, War From A World Below is an impressive collection of three tunes suitable for fans into the harsher side of metal. Well, well, well, what do you know? This disc is a two-song preview for the American band's full-length of the same name, but it is already clear that Malebolgia is a death metal force bent on spreading malice and hatred. The dual-vocal system is loud and present, the music moves fast as a shark, the drummer is a human whirlwind and the pressure incessant. Fans of older Carcass, Diabolic, Hate Eternal and Cryptopsy will love this. My only concern is how this CD features only five minutes of music, but if the full-length has anywhere near as much of an edge as this then Malebolgia will have as much staying power as any of the scene's bigger acts. Write the band at or visit the site for more information. - Ali "The Metallian"

A band called Pica Fierce, a demo called Reptile with a reptilian cover motif and thrash metal in Norway are just some of the anomalies that might hit a reviewer when checking out this quartet. This is the band's third demo and it won't take long to notice that the band's primary influences are Kreator, Death and, judging by the third song The Weight Of Condemnation, Master Of Puppets-era Metallica. The band is not bereft of ideas of its own and certainly has many things to contribute to the scene, but it certainly wears its influences on its sleeves. The sound is full, thick and professional and the demo is a good bet for fans of the aforementioned bands. The band has also added a good-looking video to the CD. E-mail or visit for a biased view of things. - Ali "The Metallian"

Troy, New York sounds like a nice place. It seems to be a scenic place and bears an appealing historic name. Then there is Re-creation!
Based out of Troy, Re-creation - possibly an unfortunate name if people read the name out loud and misunderstand - is a band with a cool metal image, a professional full-length demo and a sound that has all the hallmarks of Six Feet Under. The voice of Jim Abbott is similar to Chris Barnes and so is the band's music which is a slower form of sludgy death metal. The band also employs a higher vocal pitch on a song like Cause-Effect. The production favours the vocals and while the bass comes across well the lead guitars are rather buried. The trio can be contacted via or head over to for more information. - Anna Tergel

Then Kame Silence has an unusual name, but the cover photo of a soldier firing from a trench and a demo title reminiscent of Bolt Thrower sets things correctly if metal and war are agreed to have many things in common. The band's demo features three heavy metal songs, Winter Sun, Enemy, Virginial Fatality, which come across as a crushing bash metal that is sometimes reminiscent of Cerebral Fix and on the moodier moments (the aforementioned Virginial Fatality for instance) sounds like Desultory's second album. The singer has quite a throaty voice and the production is quite alright. Check out the band if big metal riffs is your cup of phlegm. - Ali "The Metallian"
