History & Biography
Pantheist was founded in Antwerp, Belgium by Kostas Panagiotou in 2000 as a funeral doom metal project, albeit with keyboards. In fact, Dying Millenium was the name of a synthesiser-only early demo, which went unreleased. Early guitarist Nicolas Tambuyser and Kostas were university-mates. Early demos (1000 Years in the year 2000) and appearances on compilations helped establish the act's presence in the European doom underground. The band's first concert was at the first Dutch Doom Day in 2002. The 2003 debut, O Solitude, released on Firebox Records, was funeral doom. That year the band began incorporating new members, notably Ilia Rodriguez on guitar. Panagiotou, who had grown up in Belgium after being born in Greece, was wearing priest's garb. The Funeral Procession Tour, with Skepticism, Pantheist and Until Death Overtakes Me, took place in 2003. The membership became an affair in flux. Members of Scarlet Dew and Esoteric came and went. Kostas himself likes to jump from keyboard gig to keyboard gig. The act moved to the UK in 2004.

By 2005’s Amartia ('sin' in Greek), Pantheist (now spelt Pantheist) relocated to the UK, infusing some progressive influences into the sound. The Pains Of Sleep EP of 2005 also included the 1000 Years demo. The band performed around Europe, including at Denmark’s Doom Shall Rise festival (2005). The third album, Journey Through Lands Unknown (2008), was noted for its experimental approach coinciding with a line-up shift. The band co-headlined, alongside Esoteric, the Moscow Doom Fest in 2010.

Self-titled the 2011 album, Pantheist featured post-rock, progressive rock and avant-garde flourishes, reflecting the evolving lineup and vision. There was a video for the song Be Here. After a brief hiatus, including cancelling its appearance at the Under The Doom festival in 2016, the band resurfaced with Seeking Infinity (now spelt Pantheïst again) in 2018. This record was billed as a return to funeral doom. The main man had opted to release the band's music through his own Melancholic Realm Productions going forward. The band had actually signed to Germany's Eternal Sound Records in 2014, but no material was released under the banner.

Live At St Giles, London was a live demo in 2020. Then came Closer To God (2021). Mesmur's 2023 album was entitled Chthonic. Guest organ was from Kostas Panagiotou of Pantheist to whom Jeremy and John of Mesmur contributed guitars and drums for the 2021 record Closer To God. A 2022 single was vaguely Lovecraftian sounding and was called Fthagn-Nagh. Live At Reaper 23 was another live demo. The band added a female soprano called Linda Dumitru in 2023. A proposed doom festival in 2024 never got off the ground and the band never played. The band considers 2024's Kings Must Die to be an EP despite the length of over 60 minutes. It includes a live recording from the Organic Doom festival in 2023. The band had gigs, with the likes of My Silent Wake, in 2025 and a booking at the Metal Gates Festival. To commemorate its 25 years of existence, the group released a 16-track compilation called 25 Years Of Pantheïsm through Ardua Music. There was an appearance at Plymouth’s One For Sorrow Festival in 2025. Pantheïst signed a deal with Argonauta Records to begin 2026. A studio album was due later in that year.

Pantheist has appeared at Netherlands’ Dutch Doom Days in multiple years. A 'pantheist' is a person who believes that God and the universe are one and the same.
