History & Biography Ramp, whose name was an abbreviation of the founding members’ first names (Ricardo, Antonio, Miguel and Paulinho) were thrashier to start and became more commercial with time. Ricardo invited an old school-mate Rui to join, which completed the band. The band was founded in 1989, but a single called The Last Child only emerged in 1992. This was a major label issue. Polygram also issued the Thoughts EP, which featured the two songs from the single. Several videos were made for the songs from the album. Ramp opened for Sepultura. A small Portuguese label issued the band’s debut album in 1995. The band independently issued its Evolution, Devolution, Revolution CD in 1998. It was taped by Simon Efemey in the UK. A double-live record called Ramp came in 1999. The material was recorded at the band’s tenth anniversary bash.
Paranoid Records of Portugal picked up the band and out came Nude. An EP called Planet Earth was made for a cartoon and featured a couple of cover versions. The title track was a Duran Duran cover version. The band had previously covered Bangles. The next album was only out in 2009. The group had picked up bass player Caveirinha. XXV commemorated the band’s 25th anniversary with a compilation in 2013. Things went quiet again until a new album in 2022. In the meantime, bassist JE Sales had come and gone. Drummer Joao Goncalves joined in 2022. Original member Paulinho had departed in early 2022. At this juncture the band was Duarte and Mendonca and several “guests.”
