History & Biography
Early forerunners of grindcore Repulsion came together under the influence of punk rock and hardcore in 1986, but existed under several other monickers beginning 1984. Scott and Matt had been friends since age 14 playing cover versions together. The earlier monickers had a thrashier sound influenced by Discharge and Hellhammer and opened for DRI and C.O.C. in Flint, Michigan. Repulsion influenced acts like Carcass and Terrorizer. Matt Olivo and Scott Carlson had left Genocide to jam with Death in 1985. Chuck Schuldiner of Death had returned from a stint in Canada with Slaughter and needed new members. Carlson would pick up the bass, in addition to the vocals, upon the band’s reformation. Genocide bassist Sean MacDonald had departed when two members had moved to Florida.

The Michigan, USA-based band released the Slaughter Of The Innocent demo in 1986. Labels re-release this tape on an annual basis, but the first re-release was by Necrosis Records of Carcass members in 1989. Necrosis was distributed by Earache. This was an album called Horrified. This was intended for producer Doug Earp’s Wyatt Earp Records initially. Horrified featured a cover other what the band had wanted as a member of Carcass drew the new cover after Earache dismissed the band’s artwork. A 1986 show in Toronto, Canada with Slaughter and Dark Legion proceeded without Repulsion when the band was searched at the border, drugs were discovered and the group was taken into custody. The band claimed a roadie was carrying drugs.

The band had already broken up in 1987 with Matt joining the military, but the act returned and lasted three years releasing Demo 1991 and Final Demo. Relapse Records took the time to issue a single for the Americans. It contained two of the earlier 1991 demo tracks. The group broke up despite Matt’s return. A Relapse re-release of the album features Hollingshead’s photograph mimicking the mustache look of Adolf Hitler. A couple of members were in Dejecta at this stage.

Grindcore acts Genocide (featuring members of Repulsion) and Nausea activated again and played a show together in California in 2003. The band returned in 2003 and released a live DVD called Necrothology: Vomitus Visions From The Vault. Hollingshead and Aaron Freeman departed at this juncture. Col Jones took his place before himself being replaced by Chris Moore in 2014. The band had moved to California and members like guitarists Marissa Martinez and Matt Harvey came and went.

Matt Olivo and newer member Matt Harvey of Exhumed began a band called Expulsion in 2017. The band was booked for Psycho Las Vegas and Decibel Metal & Beer Fest 2021.

Repulsion was the name of a psychosexual movie by Roman Polanski from 1965. The turn of the century brought a couple of Repulsion tribute CDs.
