History & Biography Rhymes Of Destruction was first heard through the 1995 demo, Dark Pagan Wartunes Stray Above The Land Of Huarochiri. The band was singer Bart Marescaux and guitarist and keyboardist Martijn Debonnet. They both came from a death metal band called Phlegm. Rhymes of Destruction, however, used keyboards and effects. The 1996 demo Under The Spell Of The Mist… featured newer members guitarist Christophe Verhaeghe and bassist Frédéric Caure. The band played a concert with Fleshless from the Czech Republic and goth act Slow End. The group quickly released an album called Requiem / In Remembrance Of Your Gods… This dealt with ancient Inca and Aztec gods. The label, namely Resplendence Records, was the label of singer Bart and bassist Frédéric.
There was a Promo 97 and a recording of the band at the Onan Festival next. The band moved to Shiver Records and issued A Sun Revolution. This one kept the band’s frequent instrumentals, but swapped English lyrics for Flemish ones in spite of the album title. This did not go anywhere because the band released a demo called Black Nostalgia before disappearing in 2000. The band did incorporate a drummer called Wouter Debonnet for a while, but mostly used a drum machine. Bassist Christophe’s departure was the mitigating factor in the dissolution. The members auditioned bassists, but ultimately decided it is more sensible to give up. The members, with keyboardist Koen Couckuyt, tried again 2003 and played a concert called Rhymefest in 2004, but ceased activities again.
The band called its music ‘symphonic pagan metal,’ but in reality it was a keyboard-oriented rock/wave/classical band. The label was calling the band death/doom.
Reviews RHYMES OF DESTRUCTION - A SUN REVOLUTION - SHIVER
Sigh! Great! Where do I begin? Rhymes are in fact a talented bunch. Etherial new age ascends from the musicians and their drum machine as if composing with feeling is second nature to the band. But, and here I go again, what does this have to do with me? Which part of this is metal?? This fits right into Adipocere Records' roster. It's all new age. Why am I reviewing it? To point out that the cover is lifted right off of Gorefest's album Soul Survivor. Moving on... - Ali "The Metallian"
