History & Biography
Ruins has been around since 2004 and was first heard through the Atom And Time EP of 2005. Pope was the founder. Blacktalon Media distributed the EP. The band was Alex Pope (vocals, guitar and bass) and Dave Haley on drums. The Spun Forth As Dark Nets full-length appeared a year later. The act opened for Satyricon. The band also opened for its biggest inspiration, Celtic Frost. Shows with Immortal came next. The band was in New Zealand in 2008. Place Of No Pity was on Listenable Records. It added guitarist Joe Haley (brother of David), who had recorded the band and played live with them previously, and bassist Kai Summers. The band played with Goatwhore, Impiety and Mongrel's Cross. Undercurrent was recorded over several years. David Haley drummed for Pestilence between 2012 and 2014 as that band was going through members like The Nationals went through racist tirades. The band toured with Absu in 2012 and The Amenta (again) in 2013.

Luke Ray became the third guitarist. Joe Haley joined his brother in the new-band-a-month club. The band opened for Mayhem in Australia in 2018. The members did find time to play at Australia's Download festival and open for Emperor in Australia in 2019.

Pope's vocals are a cross between Tom Warrior and Bane from Batman.

Reviews

RUINS - CAULDRON - MORIBUND
Having opened for the likes of Satyricon, Immortal, Celtic Frost and Pig Destroyer, Ruins has no doubt built a strong base for itself in its native Australia and Cauldron displays the black metal output that has propelled the band to such prominent stages. At times an amalgam of mid-era Satyricon and early Immortal (there are those names again), Ruins has the unique ability to harness mainstream dwellers that are finally ready to move past the tired Dimmu and Cradle archetype and into the land of something real. That’s not to say Ruins is commercial: far from it, as Cauldron stays fairly extreme throughout. But Ruins is the perfect group to introduce a whole horde of those seeking direction into the frozen land of black metal extremity, and Cauldron has just enough hooks and memorable passages to attach the tentacles of horror to anyone who craves a fix of something more caustic. - James Tape
